Rachel Riley: Countdown beauty winces spelling out VERY naughty word for flustered Susie

The 32-year-old blonde bombshell struggled to keep a straight face on the show today when a particularly tricky set of letters forced the contestants into a tight spot.

One opted to try for a risky five-letter word, “shugs", while the second went for a safe play of the same value, “shags".

“Yeah, Lee I think you were trying to avoid that one!” lexicographer Susie, 53, said, stifling her laughter. “‘Shug’, unfortunately, is not in the dictionary I’m afraid.”

The shot cut to Rachel Riley who was stood by the famous Countdown letters board, her eyebrows raised as she presented the word “shag”.

Appearing to be keen to get the conversation back to a PG topic, host Nick Hewer, 74, piped up: “It’s a reference to tobacco isn’t it, ‘shag’?"

Susie jumped at the lifeline, nodding and agreeing, while her Dictionary Corner co-star for the week Clive Anderson, 65, chipped in: “‘Shag’ is a bird.”

“Carpets — all that kind of thing,” Susie added, still smiling, before Clive also suggested “vagus”, as in the vagus nerve, as another option the contestants could have chosen.

Rachel was then seen standing next to the board, wincing to someone out of shot following the embarrassing exchange.

She is no stranger to navigating awkward moments on the Channel 4 gameshow, where rude words regularly pop up.

The presenter recently bravely soldiered on with the show when Susie brought up the word “a**e”.

Explaining the meaning behind the slang phrase “bottle and glass”, the Dictionary Corner favourite told her co-stars the words together meant “a**e”.

While Susie giggled guiltily for bringing up the term on the afternoon programme, Rachel managed to maintain her composure.

On another occasion, she had to spell out the word “gropes” on the board when a player spotted it in the line-up of letters on offer.

Rachel pulled an awkward face at the camera as they moved swiftly on with the show.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star, who met her now partner Pasha Kovalev, 38, on the show, shot to fame when she joined Countdown back in 2009.

The mathematician replaced Countdown stalwart Carol Vorderman and has since gone on to star on the comedy spin-off show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

In 2013, Rachel joined the Strictly line-up and was partnered up with Russian heartthrob Pasha.

She later split from her husband before striking up a romance with the professional dancer.

Rachel was eliminated in week six having battled with stage fright throughout her time on the show.

Countdown airs weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
