EastEnders cast: Is this the REAL reason Beppe star Michael Greco left BBC soap?

Ex EastEnders star Michael Greco, 47, is widely known for portraying Beppe di Marco in the hit soap, and he is keen to make a return.

Explaining why he quit acting, he told “I kind of gave up acting a while ago, a couple of years after I left EastEnders and just thought this celeb style isn’t really for me.

“I just wanted to shun the limelight and stay away from any kind of press and anything like that.”

He added: “Back then there wasn’t any social media or anything, you were just portrayed in the press whether they knew you or not.

“People would read stuff about you and mainly think it was true and no one really knew me.

“I was very private and didn’t really do interviews, I wanted to keep myself... then I just lost my way.

“I just lost my love for the acting game really.”

Admitting he is keen to make a return to Albert Square, he divulged: “I would... it’s still my favourite programme.

“It’s a programme which gave me a great lifestyle. I’ve still got some great friends there and the character was fantastic.

“I haven’t directly been asked (to come back) but I was rumoured and if I was asked I’d have a think about it.

“You should never say never to anything like that.”

Despite his hopes of returning to the soap, Michael insisted it was unlikely to happen as he has “no ties” to any of the current characters.

He went on: “Unfortunately I don’t have any ties there.

“The character doesn’t have any ties, no family or no ex-girlfriends.

“The only kind of tie I had there was Tiffany [played by Martine McCutcheon] and they killed her off.”

Despite quitting acting, Michael went on to star in Casualty last year.

Reflecting on his return to the screen, he continued: “That was great to work on. An amazing case. Two weeks filming in Cardiff.

“I had a great time there I was hoping there would be longer episodes or a longer part but that didn’t come out.”

Michael is currently starring as lead character Billy Holmes in new play Greater Game.

Alongside Harry Potter’s James Phelps and Outlander’s Scott Kyle, he will take the stage at Waterloo East Theatre from October 30.

Speaking of his new role, he said: “My passions in life are football and acting, it’s one I couldn’t really turn down.

“It’s a heartfelt story and a true story. The premiere league are putting together a memorial of the guys who died in the war."

He added: “It really touched a few strings.

“Not only because of they served for the country but the people they left behind. People forget about that don’t they.

“It’s a brilliant written play with a good director. It’s a four week run and it’s selling out nicely.”
