A dog had a miracle survival tale after falling out of an aeroplane and then wandering in the desert for six days.

The pooch, named Gasper, was travelling in a pet carrier when it fell out of the plane and broke open before take-off.

The dachsund then ran into the nearby Atacama Desert, where he roamed for almost a week before he was found.

Gaspar was travelling to Iquique, a city in northern Chile, after an internal flight from Santiago.

Dog owner Janis Cavieres asked her best friend Ligia Gallardo to bring her pet dog to Iquique after she decided to travel ahead due to previous commitments.

The two-year-old pooch called Gaspar travelled with Gallardo inside a pet carrier in the plane’s cargo hold.

But when she landed she was shocked to collect an empty pet carrier at the airport.

Cavieres organised a search operation on social media to try and track down Gaspar. According to local media, the dog had been spotted in the desert several times but could not be caught. The airline and a local army unit reportedly provided vehicles and personnel to help in the search and the animal was finally retrieved. Paola Bravo, the vet who attended to the dog after the rescue, told local media "He was dirty, stressed and malnourished. He was missing for six days and lost lot of weight." Several days later, Cavieres confirmed that "Gaspar is much better and slowly gaining weight". The airline has accepted responsibility for the broken carrier and Gaspar???s subsequent disappearance and is reportedly investigating whether it was caused by human error.
