Boy, 16, says having sex with teacher made him more popular at school

A schoolboy has told a court how having sex with his teacher when he was 16 made him more popular at school.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said being abused by Rebecca Mason-Cales, 26, turned him from an ‘invisible kid’ to ‘the quiet kid everyone knew.’

He told Mason-Cales’ sentencing hearing that others would make jokes about what had happened, and said: ‘People I didn’t know at school would come up to me and ask how it happened.’

Addressing a court in West Ada, Idaho, Tuesday, the boy also rejected the label of ‘victim’ – and called for the disgraced German and history teacher to be given a non-custodial sentence.

According to the Idaho Press, he said: ‘The interactions between me and Rebecca were all consensual, and I was never forced or coerced into doing something that I didn’t want to do.

At one point, the boy even asked anyone who supported Mason-Cales to stand up, with three full rows of 15 people doing so at his request.

But despite his plea for leniency, Judge Richard Greenwood jailed Mason-Cales for 120 days after she admitted one count of battery against a child.

The married teacher, who worked at Mountain View High School, began sleeping with the boy in August 2017, and had sex with him on at least six occasions.

She was arrested after an anonymous tip to the school district where she worked in February, with cops finding sexual exchanges with the boy on her phone that had been made earlier that month.

Prosecutor John Dinger highlighted a letter written to Mason-Coles by the teen apologizing for the affair, and said it highlighted how his immaturity had been exploited by Mason-Cales.

Dinger said the case was a prime example of ‘why you can’t have sex with children, why a teacher can’t have sex with her students.’

Mason-Cales was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life, is barred from contact with her victim until he is 21, and from working with children aged 12 to 18.
