Jose Mourinho has found his Willian in a different position at Manchester United

Ciaran Kelly - Luke Shaw

There can only be one winner - Luke Shaw.

It's remarkable to think only a couple of months ago the 23-year-old was getting skinned by San Jose Earthquakes' full-back Nick Lima; now, he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Which is no mean feat given his roller coaster relationship with Jose Mourinho in the last couple of years.

In two of United's real low points this season, against Brighton and Spurs, Shaw was one of the few to emerge with any credit. When he had an afternoon to forget, at West Ham, he was the only one to front up after the game and apologise to the fans.

The England international's attitude has been spot on and, clearly, the penny has finally dropped for him when it comes to nailing down a starting berth at United.

Just as Willian stepped up in Mourinho's hour of need in his final months at Chelsea, Shaw has been one of the few positives during a testing time for the Portuguese at United.

It's been a pretty bad start to the season for Manchester United. The off-the-field incidents added to a string of disappointing performances have led to speculation about Jose Mourinho's future and the players haven't helped.

A number of them have put in below-par performances in the opening eight league games which have led to them being dropped.

With that in mind, it's pretty easy to select United's best player so far. Luke Shaw has been by far United's most consistent performer this season and deserves to retain his place in Mourinho's starting XI.

Before the start of the season Shaw sat down with journalists and made it clear he was going to fight for his place and a new contract and to be fair to the 23-year-old that's exactly what he's done.

He's been a regular at left-back and has also added to United's attack by pushing up from the back. Then there was his goal on the opening day of the season against Leicester to add to the feel-good factor. In what's been an underwhelming start to the new campaign he's been United's brightest spark by some distance.

Richard Fay - Marouane Fellaini

A name who divides supporters and will optimise the post-Ferguson years at Old Trafford.

While Fellaini is not the most talented player at United he is certainly effective. He only needs to be utilised sparingly, but has already proven his immense worth to the club this season with a number of commanding displays.

His inclusion will no doubt cause debate amongst fans, and while Shaw admittedly deserves the majority of plaudits, the Belgian warrants a special mention.

Liam Corless - Luke Shaw

It's not saying much but Luke Shaw has been United's best player so far this season.

He scored what proved to be the winner in the Reds' opening game of the campaign against Leicester two months ago and has gone from strength to strength since, despite the struggles of his teammates.

The 23-year-old picked up an injury during the comeback win over Newcastle at the weekend and it is testament to how far he's come that he fought through it to contribute to the most important result of Jose Mourinho's United career.

United had a left-back problem last season but that problem no longer exists.
