Manchester United give injury update before Man City fixture

Romelu Lukaku will participate in Manchester United training on Friday and could return for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Lukaku missed the two wins over Bournemouth and Juventus with a thigh injury he sustained in training last Friday but will take part in the squad's training session at Carrington today. It is understood Lukaku has done light training the last two days.

United have coped well without Lukaku, who was dropped for the 2-1 win against Everton two weeks ago, but Mourinho thinks there is a chance the Belgian could be available at the Etihad Stadium.

"Yeah, Lukaku is training with the team this morning," Mourinho said. "If the answer is positive and we have of course one more session tomorrow, if the answer is positive he's ready but in this moment I can only say he trains with the team, I don't know his answer."

Mourinho added to MUTV: "No new injuries. So from Juventus we don't bring important injuries. We have touches but I don't think any player that was available for Juventus will be out. We have a chance - it is Friday morning now - that Lukaku could be back."

Jose Mourinho Manchester derby press conference round-up

United are unbeaten in their last three games at City and recovered from 2-0 down at half-time in the April derby to prevail 3-2 and prevent their neighbours from sealing the Premier League title.

United were only denied victory by a 96th-minute Chelsea equaliser last month and became the first English club to beat Juventus in their new stadium on Wednesday night as they continue to thrive against the elite, having beaten City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham this calendar year.

Mourinho was keen to downplay the derby, though.

Juventus 1-2 Manchester United reaction

"I don't think is special because of what happened last season," Mourinho opined. "Special because is a Manchester derby and it means what it means.

"We are going to try [to go toe-to-toe]. I cannot say we are going to be successful in our motivations, in our desire, but we played two difficult matches away against two very good teams - Chelsea and Juventus - and we managed to get good results.

"And even if the good results were not in our pockets the performances were there, the positive attitude was there. So we are going to try. But you are right, Manchester City are a very powerful team."
