The three outstanding Man City players of the season so far

Stuart Brennan - Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City don’t do well when it comes to individual awards, simply because they are the essence of a team, it all being about the sum of the parts.

But they have outstanding individuals as well, and Aymeric Laporte has emerged as one of them this season.

The French defender was probably fourth choice from the four centre backs in the latter part of last season, which you could put down to being hurled into a new team in the middle of a frenetic season.

But with a long pre-season under his belt, he now seems to be Pep Guardiola’s main man – the quality of his passing was evident from the first day, but now we are seeing his defensive acumen.

At Anfield his display was close to perfection, winning everything in the air, making certain of his tackles when he went to ground, and closing down danger rather than having to deal with it as it develops.

The £57million fee was huge, but we are now seeing why City made the investment.

Richard Fay - Bernardo Silva

Simply put, he has been the best City player of the past calendar year.

The diminutive Portuguese winger is a consistent performer for Guardiola and has levels of versatility rarely matched in the modern game.

Bernardo perhaps needs to add more goals and assists to his overall game but he has become a key component of the City first team and his ball retention skills mean he is indispensable in big away games.

Liam Corless - Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero didn't break his Anfield duck at the weekend but he's already sitting pretty on eight goals for the season from 11 games.

The Argentine is always going to guarantee goals and he notched his first Premier League hat-trick of the campaign in City's 6-1 win over Huddersfield in August.

A crucial equaliser in City's Champions League victory over Hoffenheim last week is his latest strike and concerns about a heel injury he picked up recently appear to have gone.

Aguero continues to be overlooked by Argentina but that won't bother Pep Guardiola a jot if the extra rest keeps his star forward in tip-top condition.
